  4. What is it? Retribution is the third instalment in the Dawn of War II series, and adds a new faction, six playable campaign races, five new units to the existing factions, and new Last Stand content. Also we are now use Steamworks for matchmaking and networking instead of GFWL. This game is developed by my team at Relic Entertainment and is shipping March 1st in North America, and March 4th everywhere else, priced at whatever they charge for an expansion pack in your part of the world. ($29.99US in North America) Six races to play in campaign, multiplayer, and The Last Stand. This was the biggest feature in Retribution, no longer are you stuck playing the the emperor-loving xeno-hating Space Marines in campaign. Now you can hate the emperor as well as the xenos at the same time! Retribution is an expansion in price only, it is completely standalone and will not be patched back into Dawn of War II or Chaos Rising. Gameplay Dawn of War II is a tactical cover-based real-time strategy game with an RPG-like campaign set in the grim&dark Warhammer 40,000 universe. Level up your commanders, unlock new abilities, and find new wargear to customize your army to match the way you want to play. Retribution adds the ability to build units during the campaign, which you purchase through resources. These 'new' mechanics will be mostly familiar to those who played our multiplayer or any other RTS game ever made. Which factions are in it? An Inquisitor named Adrastia is the new cover girl. She makes an prominent appearance in every campaign, and is playable in one of them. Eldar, a race of tragic space elves. Chaos Space Marines, eviler than regular Space Marines. A faction of pirate Freebooter Orks. Space Marines: heroic yet still kind of evil. Tyrands, which are pretty much giant space bugs. And the new guys. This is a Lord General, stop telling me we drew the Commissar wrong. Campaign and Story: Background: Retribution kicks off 10 years after the events of Chaos Rising. Gabriel and the Blood Ravens have been branded renegades by their chapter master, and have been forced into hiding. The Imperium is fed up with the problems of Sub-sector Aurelia, and has sent the Ordo Malleus to deal with the worlds their standard graceful method of choice; Exterminatus. Obviously most of the factions in the region don't really want to sit around waiting for the planets to explode while they are standing on them. Retribution gives you a chance to choose one of six races to play through a 16 mission campaign where you manipulate events and try to win the game. Progression in the campaign has been reworked. The new level cap is 10, and each level will grant a new trait/ability, so it's less of a grind to get the useful stuff. Heroes can be swapped out for Honor Guard units past a certain point in the game, allowing you to field a bigger army, and giving you access to a few unique options. Co-op is still in the game for all six races in campaign. You can choose which players get which heroes, and whoever triggers the production of built squads will get control of it. It's possible to give one player all of the heroes and let the other play the production game, if you so desire. Multiplayer Info: New units for existing races: We have a super-heavy theme on Retribution, where each race which didn't have a big super-unit got one. Chaos and Eldar both had big guys already, so they got some infantry styled units. Tyranid Swarmlord This is the warhammer 40,000 equivalent of a Slap Chop The Swarmlord is a legendary creature in the Tyranid lore, who comes in times of crisis. Unlike other bugs, the Swarmlord retains his memories from past incarnations, like a big insect Cylon. In multiplayer he is a one hitting nightmare of an opponent, and able to reinforce his fellow tyranids, plus he has some nasty auras on top of that. Space Marine Land Raider Redeemer This variant of the Land Raider chassis is equipped with an auto-cannon, melta guns, and some big rear end flamer-throwers. It also has an ability to fire off all of the grenade charges on the front in one big blast, like a giant oversized shotgun. Ork Battlewagon This contraption can charge around with its Deff Rolla and fire a big Zzap cannon. Also you can load it up with more orks to fire the turrets located on the sides. Chaos Noise Marines Chaos already has the GUO, so we added Noise Marines to Tier 1. There, all four Chaos gods are represented in the game; MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Also they fill some holes in the Chaos early game, and can be converted into an artillery unit in Tier 2. Eldar Autarch The Autarch functions as a secondary commander for the Eldar, and instead of being called in she gets cast as a global ability. For an entrance she drops 4 plasma grenades. She buffs her allies, can jump to tie up enemies, as well she can leap back into the sky so she can do that grenade attack thing again. New Maps We will be adding a new map for each game size, plus releasing a 3v3 version of White Walls of Calderis, so four or five new maps depending on how you want to count it. Multiplayer and the New Faction The new faction is the Imperial Guard. I have a post written covering some of their stuff, but the press haven't passed their embargo date yet, and I'd feel bad if I scooped them. Multiplayer Beta. There will be a pre-release multiplayer beta for people who pre-ordered Retribution, and a later entry for anyone who owns a DOWII, CR or Steam registered DOW1 product. Beta will start the 31 january -> invite only then 1st february -> retribution steam pre-order then 8 february -> DOW1 & DOW2 steam owners Matchmaking and online stuff Producer Jeff Lydell (aka EgonSpengler) recently took some time to respond to questions and speculation raised on our forums about how Dawn of War 2: Retribution will handle networking: Retribution is still a P2P game. We do have a nice new tech out of Steamworks which is their NAT reflection server. If a connection to a player fails, then we will route through Valve's servers. We've done tests internally where we start a match between two players, then block the IP connection between the two and the game continues gracefully. In theory it should mean any two people who can connect to Steam can connect to each other. I say in theory because there are certain problems which will require us to be in beta to truly test. This should go a long way to improving connections between players. NAT problems are one of the contributing factors to poor connections and skill mismatches. Source: EgonSpengler This solution sounds promising. Dawn of War 2 has had issues with NAT negotiation issues preventing friends from playing with each other and less severe cases of such causing irksome lag in-game. Demigod was a fellow sufferer of NAT negotiation issues in its early days, and in fact it suffered so much that the producer, Stardock, worked to implement a back-up system of "proxy servers" which worked much as Steamworks' "NAT reflection server" sounds like it will. Effectively, when players ran into NAT issues, they were routed through one of Stardock's provided "proxy servers", allowing the players to connect to the server (a much easier task) and thus allowing the servers to connect the players. That boosted Demigod's networking reliability supremely, so the basis certainly exists that Relic's and Valve's gambit will pay-off. Lydell also went further in his claims as to the looming impact this could have, stating that NAT problems impact in-game connection quality and even matchmaking. If true, Steamworks may yet prove the major networking upgrade many players have long sought for the game. However, Lydell offered no details as to whether Steamworks will improve lag source detection and anti-drophack capability over Games for Windows Live's woeful offerings on those fronts. Given the NAT advancements though, such improvements seem likely as Steamworks seems to have a superior grasp of the inherent issues of P2P networking in an RTS. Relic are continuing to prove that Retribution is a commitment and reward to the developer's fanbase, granting wishes and addressing issues. With "There is Only War", Relic proved it was willing to significantly rework its game in the hopes of improving it. With Retribution, Relic is proving that they are willing to partially rebuild the game to support it. Coming soon: Imperial Guard Details Last Stand update
  6. We're adding one new map for each game size and FFA, based on the destroyed jungle tileset. Similar to Calderis Refinery and Judgment of Carrion. I've also converted FFA White Walls of Calderis to a 6p version due to popular demand. So technically there are five new maps.
The focus in Retribution is the singleplayer campaign, since multiplayer updates rest mostly on imperial guard shoulders. --Basic troops of the imperial guard are the guardsmen, who build turret(or gun) emplacements and bunkers. Heavy infantry keeps the enemys head down and with weapon upgrades squad can stop even vehicles. Storm Troopers work better than their Star Wars-counterparts, since beside hitting (as in shots get where they are supposed to), troops specialise with upgrades either to vehicle destroyers, recon troops or infantry killers. Commandos(Catachans?) will do accurate pinpoint strikes scouting ahead and pointing targets to the artillery, and last but not least, Ogryn infantry is the guards top-unit, who almost equals genetically manipulated marines. The strenght of the guard lies in vehicles, wich have not be seen too much on the sequel (as in down of war 2). Other armies get only few vehicles to the field, but guard gets many, suitable for different situations. Sentinel -scout walker updates with rockets to the endgame, Manticore rocketlauncher shoots four missile barrage, chimera works as an armored troop transport, Leman russ steamrolls as a battletank and the mother of all tanks, BaneBlade, wins the wars!. Imperial Guard plays more defensive game than the rest of the Races, because the idea is to build a chain of bunkers and gun emplacements, where behind you can point targets to artillery barrages and airstrikes.

  18. FooF Today, 18:38 PM RT Patch Notes: Tactical Marines: Increased melee Fist damage from 19 to 27. This was done so that a Catachan Devil (melee damage of 25) would not out damage a Space Marine.
Breaking News: THQ has announced pre-order incentives for its Warhammer 40K RTS title, Dawn of War II – Retribution as well as a collector’s edition of the game. The CE will give players access to all of the available bonus Wargear for each of the six playable races in the game, a poster, and six race art cards all wrapped-up in a collector’s box for $39.99, which is only available to North American gamers through the THQ store. Those who prefer a particular race allegiance can instead pre-order one of the six available race packs for $29.99, which is the same price of the standard game. Each race pack includes four “unique ability and Wargear items” which can be used during the single-player campaign. The Ork Race Pack is exclusive through Steam, and the Tyranid Race Pack exclusive through the THQ Store. The Space Marine, Chaos Space Marine, Eldar and Imperial Guard race packs are also available for pre-order through both outlets along with other digital distribution sites. Race Packs are only available for electronic distribution and are only available for as an incentive at the pre-order stage, so once the game is released, it will cost you the normal pack fee through Steam. Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II – Retribution is slated for release on March 1. We’ll mail THQ and see if Europe and the UK can get in on the same offers.
