1) Преследуемый.

Hunted is quite special to me. It was my first story for Black Library, the product of a lot of failed pitches and stress, but more than anything, it was a beginning.

The very first version of Hunted was not called that (its name is lost to time thankfully), and was about a group of Imperial Guardsmen hunting a new recruit in the ruins of a Hive World. I am not going to lie, it was not very good, and my editor said so. By this point I had been banging my head against the wall of this story for some time, and was running out of will power.

‘Try a different angle,’ said Christian Dunn (the honest editor above). ‘Make the main character a chaos renegade or something, do it from his point of view.’

‘But how would that work?’ I think I managed.

‘Don’t know,’ he said. ‘Try and figure it out.’

For a while I had no idea how I was going to make it work. Then an idea came, and after that the rest of the story. It looked nothing like my original idea. It looked like nothing I had written before.

There was still hunting and dead hives, and the desperation of a man trying to survive alone in a world he did not understand, but the rest was... well I won’t say too much more. There are a few twists and turns, you see, and if you read it, I hope you will find out why I am saying nothing. Needless to say, it made it past the editors and into Hammer and Bolter, and I was more proud than I will admit.

And now it’s here again, and I am just as proud of it now as I was three years ago.

Who are the Alpha Legion?

That was the question that started it all.

I had been trying to get into the head of the Alpha Legion for a while when I wrote We Are One. I had already written ‘Hunted’ (which will be available on Thursday as part of this week’s Tales From The Archive - BL), that featured the Alpha Legion, and had vague ideas about pitching a novel about them. But who where they? There were a lot of different views on the Alpha Legion, both from the time of the Horus Heresy and beyond, but it was difficult to pin down one answer. There was Dan’s Legion, which remade their role in the Horus Heresy, there were entries in fifteen years of Codexes and Index Astartes, there were short stories and appearances in novels, all of them different from one another. But, which of them was true?

Then I realised something. The different portrayals and conflicting information on the Alpha Legion echoed what was known of them in the 41st Millennium. Servant of Chaos, cult master, infiltrator, master of lies, and all the other faces were the faces that the enemies of the Alpha Legion would see. Another idea came along and grew more heads, and then a dark little thought crept in and changed the whole story.

So the story was written, and I think it might be one of my favourites.

But did I reach an answer? Did I find out who the Alpha Legion really were?

You didn’t really expect an answer, did you?

After all, We are the Alpha Legion,

And we are one.

С момента исчезновения Кровавых Ангелов в скоплении Сигнус прошло 5 лет. Для охраны Баала Сангвиний выделил всего 20 (!!!) воинов из 120 тысяч. Во главе крохотного гарнизона - надзиратель (сиречь капеллан) Аркад.

К ним прилетает Рубио - Тилос Рубио - и заявляет, что Кровавые Ангелы отныне считаются погибшими, и потому Малкадор решил экспроприировать всё их имущество. КА отвечают, что пока жив хоть один воин, легион можно восстановить. Рубио говорит, что у Империума нет на это времени и средств, ибо какой-то гад посеял драгоценный генотех. Впрочем, если они хотят, то могут присоединиться к агентам Малкадора. Вместо этого КА решают найти Сангвиния или героически погибнуть, пытаясь убить Гора. Когда Рубио пытается их остановить, кровопролитие кажется неминуемым, но тут магистр астропатов сообщает, что пришло сообщение от Ралдорона - Сангвиний жив, легион жив. КА дружно посылают Рубио - и он только рад этому.

Swallow plan to do DG Legion fluff as a memory of some legion officers and Mortarion himself and it will cover 1/3 of the book. Barbarus and Morty childhood will be mentioned profoundly - due to the fact that we still havent seen that. It would not be a Legion novel - where would be a story driven plot and major battle for system, which he hasnt anounced. But he plans to finish the novel on the note - with Mortarion giving the order to jump to Terra. And yes - they are planning to show the Mortys reasons for betrayal. At last.
