Похоже, на бэк HH FW просто насрaли:

The 111th, in the book, is around two or three hundred Marines strong by the time of Pythos. There's little mention of FW's order of battle sadly, which leads me to suspect it was being written in a vacuum from the FW projects ( perhaps before Massacre became available? ). The 'flesh is weak' ideology comes off as being an after-effect of the Dropsite Massacre more than being an established thing during Ferrus's lordship of the Legion.

As for the choice of 111th, it could just be a generic designation, similiar to how the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus were shown as in the first 3 novels. Something for everyone to grasp, in that a "Company" is an obvious military grouping compared to Clan Vurgaan, Order Primarii, Tactical Company, as an example.

It could be said that Atticus's company is the 111th Company of the Legion as well, there's nothing saying that the Iron Hands Legion didn't number their companies overall for logistical reasons. But that's just me spouting fan theory.

The 111th, and Atticus in particular, really strike me as some kind of proto-40k version of the Iron Hands though. Not -quite- there, but the signs are there of what will affect the remainder of the Legion as a whole. It ties neatly though with the little box in Massacre that describes that some Iron Hands went violently insane. The 'Flesh is Weak' mantra could be seen as an aspect of that madness. There's certainly a massive undercurrent of self loathing for their own weakness present in the Iron Hands who get speaking roles, and blatant distrust for the Salamander and Raven Guard contingents. Atticus in particular outright refuses to speak to them.

Damnation of Pythos is very much a side story. It’s a breather after the hectic plots of Unremembered Empire, Scars and Vengeful Spirit, but to call it mere filler is a disservice. Though the book does not move the plot forward (or if it does, it’s not in any way I can see save reminding us that Chaos is on the rise) it does bring one needed element to the table.

This book grasps the Horror of Chaos to a greater degree than any book I have read before. It has such a Lovecraftian Vide it reverberates with it. This books reminds you of how horrific and mind-destroying Chaos really is, something that not even ADB has been able to pull off yet, though he has had the most truck with the servants of Chaos up to this point. It has a long, slow build, with elements being increasingly filtered into the story as it goes along. There’s some really good moments, like the man who tore his own head open by inserting his hands into his mouth, and the real eye scream. Slowly but surely all the horror elements come together until the very end, when all hell quite literally breaks loose.

It also gives a good account of the Iron Hands and their descent into madness. We can see them evolving into their ruthless 40k forms, questioning themselves and desperately seeking the answers to their failure on Isstvan. You can see even the most liberal minded of them, the one Sergeant who tried to act as a bridge between the Salamanders and Raven Guard and his cold master slowly succumb to the desire for flesh over steel. The writing there reminded me of Wrath of Iron and Flesh by Chris Wraight, and you can clearly see where the 30k and 40k Iron Hands come together in here. Also we see Iron Hands Serfs and get a glimpse of the mortals who serve this most uncompromising of Legions, which was a pleasant surprise.

I noticed that on our cousin board Bolter and Chainsword someone mentioned that there was little mention of FW's order of battle and that it may have been written separately, which isn't true as it mentions that the 111th is part of Clan Ungavarr.

The story does leave me with many questions. First, how did Pythos get settled on after the Heresy? The ecology is entirely Chaos-influenced. There are no herbivores. Even the trees and moss feed on blood. It sounds like the world should have been exterminatused at the first opportunity, and going out of the hives would have been utter suicide even for Catachan Jungle Fighters. Secondly after the ritual it sounds like Pythos is already halfway to being a Daemon World. How did it not become a full Daemon world in the years between DoP and when the Grey Knights returned to Pythos?

As the first full length HH Horror story, it is brilliant. It is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, there is no happy end at all (Indeed the end reminds me of the end to the movie ‘The Mist’), and it doesn’t necessarily move the plot forward or add any new elements to the table save the rise of Chaos, but if you want a gripping story about the horror of chaos, the mind destroying sanity of it and the threat that faces the Imperium if Chaos triumphs/ed, then go no further.

The whole thing felt like a tester for David Annandale. I enjoyed the book, to an extent, although it felt pretty aimless at times. The deamon ship was cool (not a part of any fluff I have read before), but the epilogue bit, man that annoyed me. Kinda felt like I had wasted all that time reading about these guys, rooting for them to survive, an if not that, then at least succeed in sacrifice. Seemed like an unnecessarily cruel ending, especially when all but one of the characters had died just pages before.

But, yeah, seemed like an interview in print more than anything else.

Daemonships have been mentioned in Battlefleet Gothic a bit, but yes they are a rarity in BL fiction, and it was nice to see a nod towards that.

As for the epilogue, it's actually kind of refreshing. Reminds me of Game of Thrones, rooting for Rob Stark only for him to cack it, and realizing that nobody is safe. Or the Mist, the main character kills all the others only to find out he did it for nothing. It's more like real life, these things happen. Especially after the many battles in which we know such and such a character won't die because they have to survive to m41 or whatever. It's the first real Grimdark ending in a HH book, and one that stuck with me well after I'd finished reading.

‘You’re so wrong. Realising that we have limits, and that we have weaknesses, takes courage. It takes strength. We have to accept that we must turn to the Father of Mankind for his aid. The Lectitio Divinitatus teaches us–’

‘To go against the very teachings of the Emperor, even as it purports to worship him. The logic is ridiculous, and it is forbidden.’

‘You don’t understand. The Emperor’s denial of His divinity is a test. It reminds us to reject all false gods. But when we have done so, casting down all the idols who claim to be divine, the one true god remains. We have to see through the paradox he has given us. When you reach the other side, there is such comfort.’

‘I am not looking for comfort,’ Kanshell spat. ‘None of us should. That is unworthy of who we are.’

‘You really don’t understand. If I could show you the strength needed to commit to faith, you would see how wrong you are.’

Kanshell finished eating. ‘That isn’t about to happen, is it?’

‘It could.’ From a pocket in her worn tunic, Tanaura produced a worn book. She placed it against Kanshell’s chest. ‘Please read this.’

Kanshell shoved the book away as if burned. ‘Where did you get that?’

‘I’ve had it for years. It was given to me by a serf of the Word Bearers.’

‘Who betrayed us at Isstvan! What are you thinking?’
