'The turning point for the legion perhaps came during and after the Rangdan Xenocides of the 860s. At last the Expeditionary fleets had breached the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy and in doing so had attracted the attention of the Rangdan Cerabvores, a species of such macabre power and technologcial might it seemed, for a time at least, that the Imperium had met its doom. Facing waves of attackes from the galactic east and north, and suffering losses that would not be exceeded until the dark days of the Heresy, the wars of the Rangdan Xenocides were the most terrible of any yet fought. Whole Expeditionary fleets went to their deaths without a single survivor, worlds were laid waste, dozens of Titan Legions were obliterated and by the end entire Space Marine Legions [REDACTED SECTION] lost to the Imperium. Much of what happened during this abyssal conflict is still locked under seal, but what can be said is that with the breaking of the Labyrinth of Night by the Emperor, the threat was at last stymied. What remained was for the Rangdan taint to be purged in a subsequent decade-long series of bio-pogroms that left entire human inhabited sectors lifeless to ensure what was hoped to be a final victory. It was then given to the Space Wolves of the VIth and the Dark Angels of the Ist - the latter who had suffered themselves so very dreadfully against the horror - to conduct these purges, these two Legions entrusted above all others to do what had to be done. Horus and his Legion, who had been otherwise occupied in the ongoing wars in the galactic west, were now firmly in the ascendance in the eyes of the Great Crusade, and with him and those other Legions who retained their strength having not suffered at the Rangdan’s hands did the future of the next few decades of conquest and expansion now rest.' There follows some text about how it was after this that Russ and the VIth legion started getting a bad reputation and the 'savage but noble' idea was pushed out by 'keeper of monsters'. The Dark Angels' reputation also suffered after this, and they were apparently dogged with distrust. The SW's repuation definitely seemed to wax and wane. - Pre-Russ: considered ill-disciplined and perhaps too in love with breaking their fleeing enemies (hence 'the Rout'). - Post-Russ: honoured, disciplined, Russ commanding forces of other legions, noteworthy record of victories but punishment of oath-breaker being considered 'excessive' in certain quarters. - Post-Rangdan: dark reputation, distrusted, increasing note of their 'barbarism', growing isolation from other legions, more involvement in barely commemorated 'secret wars' (e.g putting down a "fourth stage Enslaver outbreak")

The history of the Legion is broken up into three main sections: Pre-Primarch as just the VIth Legion. Here is where they earn their moniker of "the Rout," because they're pretty vicious and have a tendency to pursue fleeing enemies to utter extinction. They also have a brutal MP cadre that puts down Legionaries that stop listening. They have the attitude of the Wulfen, but none of the physiological symptoms of that as yet. Some comparisons here of how they have the inverse journey of the XIIth Legion. The Glory Days with the Primarch. Leman Russ shows the Legion how to channel their aggressive streak and they become an immensely powerful and successful Legion, and as the 2nd Primarch to be re-united they proceed to have a long and storied course in the history of the Great Crusade. The Dark War, where they end up fighting in the Rangdan Xenocides alongside the Dark Angels. When it's over, both these Legions are also tasked with the "clean-up," purging populations that are even remotely suspect of harboring any of the mind-controlling horror of the xenos fought in the Xenocides. Both Legions earn a dark reputation from this, and especially the Wolves. This widens the rift between the Wolves and some Legions that didn't fight as much in the Xenocides (Horus & the Luna Wolves are one). Horus and those Legions are then in a perfect position to win praise and accolades, as their Legions are fresher and the Imperium is desperate for good news. There's a section here that speaks of both the tandem rivalry and comradery that fosters between the Ist and the VIth because of sharing that dark history. Oh- there's a cool bit on Fenris as well. That the world makes no freaking sense and shouldn't exist, and definitely that there shouldn't be the massive variety of predators that there are on it, and the crust shouldn't work the way it does, and its orbit is bananas. Implying maybe it was built? By a crazy xenos big-game hunter? Who?? The Emperor? It would explain how he found the world so fast, but would he really send a Primarch there? Did he send all the Primarchs out deliberately? Only some and Chaos re-routed others? Weird thoughts and lots of speculation in the section itself, I really recommend it. More obfuscation than anything, as all the answers are equally plausible. There's another thing in the VIth Legion section of Inferno mentioning that tons of Titan Legios, Knight Houses, Taghmatas and even Space Marine Legions were destroyed while the Rangdan Xenocides were ongoing.

The XVth Legion was born quite late - Terra was already unified, Luna was taken and the first-born Legions had started to bring the rest of the Sol System to heel. Storms marked the creation of the Legion and the start of the Great Crusade, later known as The First Tempest. It's said that the Emperor himself has selected many of the first recruits, an honour done to almost no other Legion. Although the implantation rates were high, only a thousand warriors - a fully operable initial pattern Legion induction - knelt before the Emperor and made their Oaths of Eternity. The Master of Mankind bade his "Thousand Sons" to rise, and at that exact moment the storms surrounding Terra broke. Something that's quite obvious once you read through the background section - the XVth Legion always were some kind of outcasts. As soon as it was clear that they had more psykers than other Legions some wanted to disband them. On Ostrastis, the first Millenial of the IIIrd Legion withdrew when a company of the Thousand Sons joined the mustering. During the Colgren Campaign, the Dusk Raiders refused to look at, listen to or speak to any of the Thousand Sons, and even Horus voiced concerns. Once the Flesh Change started to manifest and kill more and more legionaries the same voices called out again, calling for them to be disbanded. While some saw it as mercy, given to a great Legion dying in decay and shame; others wanted them to be obliterated, purged - cut from the Imperium like cancer - yet the Emperor refused. It was Magnus who saved his sons, but again they numbered just 1.000 warriors. Even reunited with their Primarch, a few of the other Primarchs - especially Mortarion and Corax, wanted to see them censured. The Librarian Project was the only spark of hope for them, and even that was ended by the Edict of Nikaea. Once reunited with Magnus, the Legion was re-organised into a pattern of his own design named as "The Pesedjet". The full panoply of the Legiones Astartes was represented, from Heavy Support Squads, to Destroyers and Jetbikes. Yes, they were a Legion of psykers - but they also were still Space Marines. Their line companies were called Circle, and all Circles were part of one of the nine Fellowships. They favoured the mechanised tactical squad, with mobile speeder and flyer reconnaissance units. Frontline units prefered the Land Raider Proteus, with the Rhino beeing used for second line and support duties. Instead of wasting their basic troops in attrition-based warfare they adopted the use battle-automata (some of their own design) as shields and vanguards. In addition to the core structure of the Legion, there were also five cults - Pavoni, Raptora, Corvidae, Athanean and Pyrae, aswell as three Red Orders - Order of Ruin (basically the siege makers, logistical specialists and planners), Order fo the Jackal (temple guard and Apothecaries) and the Order of Blindness - Scouts and Destroyers. "Картинки" Есть какая-то ирония в том, что Коракс жаловался бате одновременно на Магнуса и на Мортариона :D
