Hi again guys, As requested, here's a quick word from me on deathreapa's list of Vostroyan 'facts' (as posted above ^ ). The following is a real mish-mash of his original post and my own additions. Please bear in mind that I'm in no way representing GW/BL in any official capacity here. Thanks. ossbohk-vyar - form of hand-to-hand combat (taught/practiced in 37 'forms' with higher numbers denoting greater levels of mastery) chevek - outsider, a non-vostroyan (term is derogatory) rahzvod - a clear alcoholic drink, looks and tastes like vodka (there are many varieties depending on region of origin - some are slightly coloured by their ingredients) khek - swear (adv khekking) ohxolosvennoy (ohx' for short) - A thick and salty drink brewed like coffee, described as being made from powdered grox meat with stimms and preservatives added. Manufactored primarily on Vostroya. The Vostroyran workers swear by it as it is the only thing that helps them through their double shifts. (Yes, and it's consumed in large quantities by Firstborn in the field. Drink hot if possible.) ushehk - seven string instrument played by a bow, the high pitched notes and small sizes might make it attune to a fiddle or violin (yes, but with a sound slightly more akin to the Chinese erhu). Shiny - slang for anyone being deployed for the first time, like 'green' zadnik - derogatory term (noun) Treatis Elatii - Vostroyan religious text pertaining to the Grey Lady, Saint Nadalya, the Vostyra patron saint (yes, spot on!) Vostroyan facts Vostroya isn't technically a hiveworld. Neither is it a forgeworld. Instead, it falls somewhere in between (labelled an Industrial World). It has a population of about 9.3 billion. The birth and death rates are very high, keeping the population figures fairly stable (taking into account the fact that first-born sons are extremely numerous, providing a massive amount of soldiers for the founding and reinforcement of IG regiments.) The landscape is extremely bleak - highly polluted. Life outside 'managed' zones is almost impossible. Animal and plant life is almost non-existent. Most food is imported. The planet is ruled by the Techtriarchy - a council of Mechanicus members and more traditional planetary government personnel/representatives. There are seven large and distinct administrative zones/regions stretching around the planet's more temperate equatorial belt (e.g. The Magdan, Sohlsvodd, Muskha, etc). The far colder north and south are unlivable. Vostroya has one moon - Turtolsky. Recruitment Every first born son is drafted into military service on their 18th birthday (18 is the official ideal but, depending on circumstances, it would be more accurate to say 16-19). They are trained and sent out into the galaxy as replacements for the losses of other regiments (new regimental foundings also take place if and when they're called for by Sector Command). New arrivals to the front are called 'shinies' by the veteran troops. A soldier of the Firstborn is required to serve a minimum of 10 years in the guard. At that time they may (circumstances permitting) choose to continue in the Guard for life, or return home. (Actually, very, very few get to return home - such men are almost exclusively high-born nobles of tremendous wealth who've served long, distinguished careers. They may take positions in military academies and the like, but it's actually extremely rare. When and if a low-born trooper survives long enough to actually leave the IG, he is permitted to establish a new life for himself on the nearest habitable world to his last posting. There's nothing to stop a Vostroyan trooper trying to buy passage home, I suppose... but he'd be crazy to want to return to the freezing, polluted world of Vostroya.) Other interesting notes on the Firstborn most if not all officers are issued power sabers and bolt or hell pistols (Ah, not necessarily true. Col. Kabanov's hell-pistol is an extremely valuable family heirloom that took years to finally end up in his hands. Power-sabres and bolt-pistols are more common, though the very finest quality STC versions are not. Vostroya's status as a weapons and munitions producer means such weapons are less rare among their officers than in other regiments, but they're not common by any means. In cases where power-sabres can't be issued to an officer, he'll receive a mono-molecular edged sabre instead.) The firstborn are both extremely pious as well as loyal to the mechanicus cult. This might come from the fact that it seems that Vostroya is a near forge world and has a history of a saint's visit to it, making it prime real estate for both the mechanicus and Ecclesiarchy. They however are not above speaking their mind when they are not in a combat zone. (This is a tough one. The planet is ruled by the Mechanicus, but strongly pressed into the more orthodox Imperial religion by the Imperium itself. The two belief systems can only co-exist when those who worship the Machine Spirit (aka. The Omnissiah) see him (it?) as an aspect or alternate face of The God-Emperor of Mankind (much in the way that many Christians believe in the Holy Trinity). Saint Nadalya's visit to Vostroya cemented the Vostroyan acceptance of this 'fused' belief system, but the Ecclesiarchy has never been overly happy about it. The Mechanicus probably don't like it either, but they're smart enough not to 'rock the boat'. With the Mechanicus and the Imperium needing each other, there is little alternative.) Most officers are high born, this means that they are from the high class while the general foot soldier is of low class. This class divide has little effect normally though political fighting and maneuvering has been known to effect some campaigns (Ref - This is class divide is a major conflict for the book Rebel Winter's main hero Captain Sebastev as he is a low born given command of a company) (I'd say the class difference creates a massive rift between Vostroyans. The high-born have never needed to slave away in a factorum. They've never had to see their parents driven almost to the point of death by brutal shifts on the assembly lines. Many Firstborn are glad of the draft into the IG - it spares them the horrible fate suffered by the rest of their family. It also inspires in them a great sense of duty. They can't allow for their parents/siblings suffering to mean nothing - so they'll fight all the harder for Vostroya.) All companies have at least one commissar and one priest. Though more many be assigned. The priests are warrior priests mostly. (Not necessarily true. One commissar is usually enough per regiment, as is one priest. Forgive me a little artistic license with Rebel Winter, but I wanted a story told at company level which still included a priest and commissar. Commissar Karif was sent to the eastern front as unofficial punishment for his part in the suicide of a general's son (yeah, I know there are other commissars out there, too). Father Olov is easy enough to explain - he's a born fighter and would have insisted in the first place on staying with Sebastev's company when they were left to guard Korris.) (Whether a priest is a warrior or not depends on the individual. Most are content to stay behind the lines offering comfort, Ministorum services and the opportunity for troopers to give confessions.) Personnel from other branches, such as the Ecclesiarchy and Mechanicus attached to the firstborn are in fact main from Vostroya themselves. They are later born sons and daughters who wish to serve their world. (This is fair comment. It's not a concrete rule, though.) Most firstborn seem to sport a mustache of one type or another, none are clean cut. (Yup! This is generally true. Vostroyan moustaches are viewed as a sign of adulthood and masculine virility. The importance of a moustache for Vostroyan men (they're always bad on women!) varies depending on the region they come from. The people of Muskha, for example, place extreme levels of importance on having a moustache. A man without one is considered to be openly rejecting his manhood. Beards are acceptable so long as they're accompanied by a nice big 'tache. Phew! Well, I hope this is useful/interesting to you guys. It was fun for me to revisit some of these points so long after the book was written. Hopefully, I'll have a chance in the near future to elaborate more through a proper sequel. The Citadel, published in the IG Omnibus in December, will have to tide you Firstborn fans over until then. ;) Now get cracking on that module, will you? Very best, Steve Parker, 12th Army HQ "И еще"He re-read the official note in his hands, and sweared terribly. This most certainly wasn’t one of the best days in Colonel Mihailovs’s life. He had a huge hangover, due to the celebration of the new standard year, in which he, alongside with other commanding officers of the Vostroyan Firstborn 5th regiment, had played the ancient and traditional game of litherball. He actually had managed to won, by drinking seven 0.7l- sized bottles before falling asleep in his own vomit. (the Commisar Dubayew was a close second with six 0.7l and a 0.5l) Nontheless, the High Command had send an urgent message this morning, telling that in 5 hours an Inquisitor from Ordo Hereticus and a supporting Commisar will be sent to check upon the regiment, alongside with some Adeptus Mechanicus that’ll analyze the condition of the mechanized regiment’s vehicles. The message had come an hour ago, and mostly everyone was panicking. And those who weren’t were still asleep from yesterday’s festivities. Mihailov ordered to get him a bottle of cold beer, and sat down to reevaluate the situation. It’s either Penal Legion or a blast from a laspistol for him. He quickly drank his beer, ordered everyone to get ready for commision and went to sleep for the remaining hours, hoping that when he wakes up, his appearance would be more human-like. Currently, he could be easily confused with an Ogryn, if not for his uniform He got woken up by his personal guard just as the imperial shuttle was landing in the airfield. Feeling a tad bit better, but still frigthened, he went out to greet the incoming vessel. The regiment was nicely lined up, right next to their vehicles. Almost. The soldiers had been celebrating as well last night, and even the local gearheads looked quite weird. Well, at least they had mechanical means of removing alcohole poisoning from their organism. The veterans squad was nowhere to be seen, though, and that almost started to unsettle him, but this minor problem quickly wanished when he finally saw his commisar. Dubayew was still completely drunk, his coat was covered in an unknown liquid, and his hat missing. The Commisar greeted Mihailov by vawing his hand, while at the same time he held a half-drunk bottle of „Vostroya Finest” liquor in the other. „Oy cap’n!” ,he shouted, „i’m juz gona greetz the *hic* off...ofdf...ofishals, and be rait bak for ze party.” Mihailov instinctively looked around searching for a heavy object with whom to disable the commisar, but then the ramp opened, and his heart trembled, as the three official persons, supported by a tactical squad of Ultramarines Space Marine chapter, started to descend. Colonel quickly dashed next to the commisar and pulled him next to himself in the line of regiment’s officers. He prayed for the emperor above and to soldiers by his side, that he still would be alive tomorrow. His chances were very slim. As the guests walked towards him, silently looking at the regiment’s armoured (and almost sober) might, Mihailov got a comlink message from his supply command: „Knjaz, the Hardened Veterans squad refuses to leave the hangar in which we keep our alcoholic beverages, notably, Vodka. They also have threatened me, that they’ll cut my genitalia off, if i disturb their party. Our commisar had already been there and tried to settle the matter, but i suppose that it is quite ovbvious that he had failed. What should i do, if the inspection comes here?” Colonel sighed, and just silently replied: „Pray. Or get drunk yourself. At least you’ll feel better.” The Inquisitor was a female of Tallarn origin, the Commisar and the Enginseer beared some Cadian regiment symbols. The marines...well, were as marine-ish as marines could be. The Inquisitor introduced herself as Khufa Al-Sheera and the Commisar as Gordon Weissmann. Mihailov got his strenghts together, and replied: „Colonel Knjaz Ljev Nikolayewitch Mihailov. commander of the Vostroyan Firstborn 5th „Grim Jesters” mechanized regiment, ready to report, m’am!” Dubayew also wanted to reply, but luckily, got called away by a sergeant to „settle a dispute” Of course, the sergeant that called him was completely drunk as well. The inquisitor seemed ignorant of this incident, and ordered the enginseer to inspect the tanks, and the Adeptus Mechanicus of this base, the marines and the commisar got the duties of inspecting the troops, and herself, she said, would inspect the officers. A swift idea was born in colonel’s head. „Excuse me, m’am! But might we indulge upon this matter together with the officers in my private chambers?” She nodded, and followed him to his personal barracks, and so did most of his officers. Those, sober enought to walk, that is. Gordon Weissmann had seen many terrors of the 41st millennium, but he certainly wasn’t ready to see such things as he saw here. Namely, he had just checked in on one armoured fist squad, and was already terrified. „And what the heresy is that, trooper? A gun, given to you by your grandmother, you say? You see, only ONE, ONE special weapon per squad! And what do you think will happen, if you all one day become servants of the dark gods? How are other regiments supposed to fight you, when your squad has a weapon...by the way, WHAT SORT OF A WEAPON IS THIS ANYWAY? A lasgun, you say? Well, that’s the most insane parody of a lasgun that i’ve ever seen! So, you’ve got improved sights on it, eh? And what’s that? A portablle, barrel-mounted grenade louncher? Oh, and you’ve even got a small bottle of...or SPIRITS in the handle? And what are you supposed to do with this, when the Orks charge you? WHAT? Orks don’t like your liquor? Ehh, trooper, shooting you wouldn’t be good enough. Okay then, next one in line. AND WHAT WOULD BE THIS? What modifications have you made to this heavy bolter? Straps to carry it alone and to be able to load it alone? Like, was this gun also made by your grandmother? EH? It was made by THAT GUY’S grandmother? What, are all your grandmothers weaponsmiths?” Then he sat down on the ground as he heared a proud and loud „YES!” from all the regiment’s men in sight. „Well, if it’s so...ehh...just give me some of your „Vostroya Finest” and might be some custom-made Laspistol. This is going to be a long, long day...” The first oficer went in the room that the inquisitor had chosen for her inquiries. He came out after 20 minutes, seemingly cheerful, and told the colonel to „not worry about stuff so much!” Mihailov started to sob silently. He had at least hoped that some of his men weren’t drunk. The second officer went in. He returned after 10 minutes, and informed the colonel, that the inquisitor had found his secret candy-stash and tested it for „heretical components”. Little that she know, that most of the candies made in Vostroya were vodka-filled. And not just ordinary vodka, no, these candies were specially ordered by the colonel, after his regiment had helped to defeat a Necron awakening on the Lanceus 9. These were the extra strong candies, and he had ordered a box for every soldier in the regiment as a new-year’s gift that year, for they truly did act heroically back then. Hes box was still unopened, as a personal memory of the case. But, he thought, a box of vodka-filled candy for his life is a fair trade. He entered the Inquisitor’s chambers and saw her, lying half-naked on his table. By looking at the last officer’s that had been here, overhappily looking face, he stretched his eyes in terror, yet said nothing, and softly picked her up (as well as her bra and other clothing) and carried her outside, where an Ultramarine was already carrying the Weissmann, who was sincerely greeting the regiment soldier’s grandmothers for some reason, and yelling that they were the best woman in the galaxy. And he somehow had gotten hold of one of the surplus prank laspistols, that doubled as ligthers too. The Marine looked confused, when the colonel put the inquisitor in his hands. Other ultramarines were appearing as well, pusing forwards a huge metal scrap object. By the tales of the eyewitnesses, it was the inspection’s techpriest, after „examinating” the regiment’s altered vehicle fuel. Mihailov once again got the hold of himself and proudly said: „Ultramarine, Sir! I wish you a happy new standard year of heretic-crushing, and i wish to thank High Command for the excellent joke! These actors, as great as they might be, cannot comply with the high standards of the Imperial Guard, as we can clearly see by their current state. But, compliments for Lord General for his excellent sense of humour, sir!” The marine looked at him, his eyes wide open, and said: „Ermm...yeah. I congratulate you too, trooper. The marines shall...inform Lord Commander of this, and also the inquisition.” After 20 more minutes, the shuttle was leaving the base. All was peaceful, except Dubayew and the veterans singing perverted songs about Tallarns, while competing on the amount of vodka that they can drink with one gulp. Mihailov, on the other hand, prepared himself. After all, they are planned to assault the local Tau base on this planet in a month or so, and he’d better write a greeting to the High Command after this. To conclude this properly, let me say that the Vostroyan Firstborn „Grim Jesters” 5th mechanized never saw an inspection again. http://z4.invisionfree.com/Boot_Camp/index...?showtopic=8751 http://z11.invisionfree.com/The_Firstborn_...p;#entry3593647 Ссылка на комментарий Поделиться на другие сайты Поделиться
