I just came back from the Toronto GW show and reviewed the Vraks III book, concentrating on the new Krieg armoured army list.

Strangely enough, the army list contain rules from the new IG Codex (ex: orders)...but the Renegade army list did not.

The doctrines the Krieg army list has are included as "special rules". They work EXACTLY the same as before except they've been reworded so they work with the 5th edition rules. For example, "Die Hard" works exactly the doctrine except it ignores all negative modifiers from CC (not by being out-numbered). Also the "Iron Discipline" works exactly the same... ignoring the text about the leadership bubble.

The point cost for a troop squad is the same as what's in currently in the Krieg army list [Weird!]

The point cost for a platoon commander squad went down.

The point cost for the company command squad went down (still expensive). No text I could find about getting advisors...but I might have glossed over that.

The point cost of the Grenadiers went up and cost the same as the Storm Troopers in the new IG Codex.

The Death Riders cost went up too (I think).

Hopefully the point values have not been finalized. The Renegade army list still had the point values from the old IG Codex.

There was a ton of rules for Chaos...many Demon Princes & such.

Plague Ogryns has a special rule that can wound anybody very easily (think the sniper special rule)

Chaos Reaver Title rules were in there.

Zombies were in the Nurgle army list at the same point value as an IG soldier.

Grey Knights and a Space Marine chapter called the "Red Hunters" make an appearance.

Chaos Lord Zhuhor and Inquistor Hex rules are in there.

Apocalypse data sheets for both Chaos & Imperium were there (including a new Death Rider formation)

90% of the new rules were for Chaos. If you're a Renegade player, you'll enjoy this book.

I just got the word that today; June 20th is FREE RPG Day across the country. That means lots of manufacturers have provided quick start or preview copies of thier RPG rulessets to local retailers across the country.

Fantasy Flight Games have provided copies of the introductory adventure Forsaken Bounty, a quickstart adventure for the upcoming Rogue Trader RPG.

A friend of mine at GW US HQ proposed an irresistible topic to me this week (thanks, C.M.), so here it is for your consideration and participation. With so many preview copies of Planetstrike out there now, surely some gamers must already be plotting the diabolical destruction of their enemies. Whether you're contemplating a set of intricate and stalwart defenses to trip up invaders or planning a destructive lightning strike to circumvent those defenses, the new set-up, force organization, deployment and stratagems for Planetstrike likely have many 40K players thinking quite a bit about this latest expansion for their favorite game. So, here gentle players pretending to be merciless commanders, are some questions to get you thinking and sharing ideas about Planetstrike:

1) What are some sample killer army compositions or nasty unit combinations for each 40K army using the new Planetstrike force organization for both attackers and defenders?

2) Which of the new stratagems seem to be the most effective? Least effective? Most colorful and fun? Also, note that the new stratagems have a "cost" depending on their perceived efficacy such that some of them use up multiple stratagem points. Which of them are possibly overpriced or under priced and why?

3) Which armies have the greatest potential as attackers? Defenders?

4) When combining Planetstrike with Apocalypse, which Apocalypse units and formations will be the most wicked, or fun, or wicked fun to employ?

EDIT - Okay, contributions... some from ninjas, some from French White Dwarf:

1. The Dark Angels fortress will be released but not until after October-ish. I'm currently trying to get confirmation on this from other sources. (Actually in truth I'm too busy doing other things at the moment and haven't managed to chase this up yet )

2. The Rhino is fixed as part of the Battlescape and can't be removed. However if I'm reading right, according to the French July White Dwarf, there is also a Land Raider wreck associated with the Battlescape. So it seems it comes with either a Rhino or Land Raider? Or perhaps there are different versions of this set with different army's wrecked vehicles? Interesting but strange.

3. GW will be re-releasing the wrecked Aquila Lander from Battle for Macragge, which can be used in conjunction with Planetstrike stratagems. This is also mentioned in White Dwarf.

EDIT #2 - Oh and July White Dwarf has a nice article dealing with modelling Chaos, Eldar, Ork and Tau Bastions.

Well guys it was only a matter of time before some lucky Warhammer 40k fanatic got an early shipment of Planetstrike goodies. The fine folks over at Beasts of War have thrown up 2 videos of the Bastion and Skyshield kits and sprues. Enjoy!

In addition to GW's Planetstrike product launch on July 4, many Games Workshop stores and independent retailers will be hosting Planetstrike hobby events that day to give everyone a chance to test out the new scenery and expansion rules.

For example, GW's Maryland Battle Bunker & HQ will be hosting The Battle Of Cold Steel Ridge, a massive mega-event pitting players against a Tyranid Hive army of more than 25,000 points! Rally your troops, prime your weapons, set your fuses and prepare for war. This game will combine Planetstrike with Apocalypse over ten large game tables for one of the largest Battle Bunker game events ever held by GW in the US. Similarly Planetstrike-themed events will take place in stores all over North America that day. Please contact your local game store for information about specific events in your area.

Something short but oh so tantalizingly sweet for us Warhammer 40k old-schoolers...

So a little bird told us that GW was going to start a program in which gamers could essentially petition to have some of their favorite classic models brought back into the collectors range. This of course all depends if they still have the original mould to work off of, and the number of requests. There will supposedly be a mention of this program in one of the upcoming White Dwarfs.

In various Specialist Games-related forums, you often see players decrying Games Workshop's limited support for the many and varied Specialist Games. A case in point is the lack of 6mm-scale Necron and Tyranid armies for use with Epic:Armageddon, mentioned in an earlier post. This situation was exacerbated recently when several popular Forge World Epic miniatures disappeared from the online store, such as the Tau, Grey Knight Terminators and Warhound Titans. Understandably, many members of the Epic community are more than a little annoyed by this--particularly since, to date, there has been no official communication from either FW or GW about what is going on. My spies tell me the situation is that these Epic moulds require re-tooling, and FW is reviewing the financial viability of doing this, but official confirmation would be nice...hint hint, GW/FW! Nevertheless, this situation raises the issue of what GW could and should be doing with its SG ranges. Most notably, GW's marketing department should be doing a lot more to communicate with these player bases, but there is more they could be doing as well: they could be leveraging their SG range in order to retain their aging player base. I will use my favourite SG game, Epic:Armageddon, to explain. As previously discussed in my series of posts, Epic:Armageddon is conceptually more complex than Warhammer 40,000 due to its higher level of abstraction. In my experience, younger players (under 15, say) who play 40K may not get Epic, as evidenced by the "What?? Devastators only carry missile launchers??" question I keep seeing posted around various forums (it's an abstraction, guys--the missile launcher could be a lascannon). These younger players often bypass Epic in favour of 40K, which is of course fine for GW--so long as these players are buying 40K miniatures and rulebooks, its revenue stream remains secure. There is a flip-side to this, however: the problem of retaining players as their gaming tastebuds change. I will use my own experience as an example. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader came out when I was about 14 years old, and myself and a mate of mine went nuts for it. We kept playing well into 2nd Edition, too, but he--always a gamer much more than a hobbyist or painter--eventually became frustrated by the tactical limitations of the game around age 20 and lost interest in 40K. Thankfully, he discovered Epic instead (then called Space Marine), and still plays Epic:Armageddon today--and I can even occasionally get him to play 40K. The point of this story is that, if Epic had not been available as an alternative system, GW would have lost my mate as a revenue source--probably forever. I think it is in GW's interests to seek to retain maturing 40K players (the 20- and 30-somethings) who, like my friend, might be looking for something new by transitioning them into Epic--or Aeronautica Imperialis or Battlefleet Gothic (or Space Hulk, for that matter). The universe of the 41st Millennium is as compelling as it ever was; in my experience, it is the gaming system with which people tend to get fatigued. If I was running GW, that would be part of my player retention strategy: a player looking for something different from 40K (as my friend eventually was) all too easily leaves tabletop gaming entirely, and then ceases to be a source of revenue for GW; whereas, if this player is introduced to an alternative GW system that meets his or her gaming needs, the player remains an on-going source of revenue via both--or even multiple--systems, and one that was cheaply won at that in marketing budget terms. That's just my 5 cents, of course. At the end of the day, I still get to play 40K and Epic. And Battlefleet Gothic. And Space Hulk. And Dawn of War 2. And Epic 40,000: Final Liberation (yes, I still play that old PC game from time to time--and it's still awesome). I call that a win-win (win-win-win-win) scenario.

We have seen schedules with August-15 as the ship date for Planetary Empires. Look out for it.

Thats kind of odd don't you think. Conversion of the current metal Daemon Prince, or something else altogether?
