Retaking Karak Eight Peaks:
The rumors of lost dwarven treasure were retold throughout the Old World, and eventually adventurers reached Karak Eight Peaks; those few that returned rarely brought any treasure with them, save for the tales that the city was effectively uninhabited. Over the intervening millennia numerous dwarven expeditions to recover Karak Eight Peaks were attempted without success, but 40 years ago a descendant of King Lunn, Belegar Ironhammer of the Angrund Clan, succeeded in reclaiming the citadel, above ground. Belegar declared himself King, and the dwarves recovered many ancestral treasures. Belegar’s interest soon turned to repairing the citadel’s defenses though, and with the citadel’s walls rebuilt, many of the underground chambers and tunnels to the citadel were sealed. The new King was certain, that once their enemies discovered the dwarves had returned, they too would be back! Soon enough, an army of orcs and goblins laid siege to the citadel; the siege would last for 25 years, and was only broken when Belegar’s kinsman Lord Duregar Hammerfist and the runesmith Hurgar the Black led the first of five relief expeditions from Karaz – a – Karak. The greenskins have been driven back from the walls many times since, but they always return.
The few thousand dwarves of Karak Eight Peaks live in a perpetual state of war. The entire ground level of the hold has been reoccupied, along with the King’s Chambers, the Great Hall, the foundries and a few clan halls; the mines remain sealed though, to avoid inviting skaven assaults or worse. Unfortunately, the mountains outside the hold’s walls still swarm with orcs and goblins.
King Belegar and Queen Kemma cling to the dream of restoring Karak Eight Peaks, and encourage their refugee clansmen to return; there is an open invitation to expatriate dwarves to settle here too. The King contracts human mercenaries and scouts to augment the defenses, though funds are limited occasional shipments of gold are received from Karaz – a – Karak. These shipments are guarded by a small army, and are often accompanied by groups of settlers; they are a tempting target for the greenskins, but a lethal one. Karak Eight Peaks is known to welcome adventurers, even a closely watched handful of elves too; they are encouraged to use the hold as a base for expeditions in the nearby mountains and caves.
