фееричное сжирание информации в мозгу студента: вопрос "Писал ли В. Скотт стихи" сжимается в лаконичное "Писал ли В. Скотт", на что тестируемый отвечает категорическим "да". и ведь хрен поспоришь.

по Garro: Sword of truth от L. Goulding'а:

Still not sure about this 'Grey Knights' thing - fans seem to be taking it as absolute fact that Garro and his boys are Grey Knights.

They're not. Jim referred to them in recent interviews as "the Knights Errant" and "Malcador's Chosen". He also said he thinks it's really narrow-sighted to see an M41 institution and assume that it was created right out of the box in M31.

Once again, I draw everyone's attention to the fact that Garro and Loken (and Varren, and Qruze) are not psykers. That is the FIRST requirement for being a Grey Knight.

And seriously, Tarvitz is dead. There will be no resurrection. No magical plot loophole. I have a list of characters which the authors asked me to prepare, to keep track of named characters who are still alive, for use in future stories. Tarvitz is not on it.

He's gone.

Anyone who feels grievance with that should light a candle and move on to REAL problems in the world.

+ еще кусок по хронологии:

And in answer to the popular question - yes there will be an official timeline at some point soon.

And finally, to answer the other question - Calth takes place one year after the Isstvan V massacre (hints can be found throughout KNF, and I personally checked them!) and OoM takes place sometime between six months and a year after that. There is then *an amount of time* (how much? I can't say...) and then LoO takes place. So it is longer than a year. It's slap bang in the Age of Darkness.

Screw canon

Разместил hades_wench, 17.01.2012, 00:20

Naw, actually, you're dead wrong, dude. You're seeking "canon" in the sense of something that doesn't exist in 40K - because it doesn't exist, you're going to keep being wrong when you make those claims about what is and isn't canon. You're going to continue missing the point until you adjust that outlook - which isn't easy; I had to have the IP department and the IP manager (among other GW brass) directly explain it to me several times. Read the article linked earlier, or any of my posts, for the actual explanation of how 40K's creators deal with canon.

You're free to keep ignoring them, of course. I'm not sure why you still are - it's starting to look deliberately obtuse, in all honesty. Black Library is as canonical as Forge World and the games studio. That's just how it is, whether you think it rocks or sucks. That's how GW itself views it. You don't have to see it the same, but that's your preference, not how it is.

You see "picking and choosing canon as defeating the point of canon." You're absolutely right, which is why 40K doesn't have canon in those terms. That's the point of the setting. It's not about canon and a metaplot. It's a sandbox. It's not bound to the same laws of canon as most other settings. Trying to apply them will always make the applier wrong.

If the explanation in the article and my own posts are still not working for you, here's a quote from Marc Gascoigne:

"Раскрывающийся текст"
"The Background exists as a context for the games that people play. Despite the occasional event, the background was never intended as an ongoing narrative that would be constantly updated. The back story presents questions, enigmas, problems, and conflicts. Gamers explore and solve these issues by playing games and developing armies. In short, the background provides the beginning, but the players provide the end.

What is Cypher up to? Well, he's up to whatever you need him to be up to for your games and campaigns. What does the cult mechanicus have to do with the dragon? Whatever you want that relationship to be.

The background should be like Schrödinger's Cat - Nothing is defined until the players look into the box by playing games and determining the outcome for themselves. Backgrounds should be full of possibilities to be exploited and expanded by players, not answers that limit the potential of the game and its setting.

"Keep in mind Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are worlds where half truths, lies, propaganda, politics, legends and myths exist. The absolute truth which is implied when you talk about "canonical background" will never be known because of this. Everything we know about these worlds is from the viewpoints of people in them which are as a result incomplete and even sometimes incorrect. The truth is mutable, debatable and lost as the victors write the history...

Here's our standard line: Yes it's all official, but remember that we're reporting back from a time where stories aren't always true, or at least 100% accurate. if it has the 40K logo on it, it exists in the 40K universe. Or it was a legend that may well have happened. Or a rumour that may or may not have any truth behind it.

Let's put it another way: anything with a 40K logo on it is as official as any Codex... and at least as crammed full of rumours, distorted legends and half-truths.

I think the real problem for me, and I speak for no other, is that the topic as a "big question" doesn't matter. It's all as true as everything else, and all just as false/half-remembered/sort-of-true. The answer you are seeking is "Yes and no" or perhaps "Sometimes". And for me, that's the end of it.

Now, ask us some specifics, eg can Black Templars spit acid and we can answer that one, and many others. But again note thet answer may well be "sometimes" or "it varies" or "depends".

But is it all true? Yes and no. Even though some of it is plainly contradictory? Yes and no. Do we deliberately contradict, retell with differences? Yes we do. Is the newer the stuff the truer it is? Yes and no. In some cases is it true that the older stuff is the truest? Yes and no. Maybe and sometimes. Depends and it varies.

It's a decaying universe without GPS and galaxy-wide communication, where precious facts are clung to long after they have been changed out of all recognition. Read A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M Miller, about monks toiling to hold onto facts in the aftermath of a nucelar war; that nails it for me.

Sorry, too much splurge here. Not meant to sound stroppy.

To attempt answer the initial question: What is GW's definition of canon? Perhaps we don't have one. Sometimes and maybe. Or perhaps we do and I'm not telling you."

- any idea if we will find out what happend to Tarvitz? Did he meet his end on Istvaan III?
- I'm sure we will. I have an idea for a story set on Isstvan that's not quite what you'll expect...
- Excellent! Along with finding out what happend to Ancient Rylanor?
- Actually, he's the focus of that memento-like story.

опять из глубин фейсбука:

Q: Will we ever found out how the Iron Warriors 'recruited' some of Legio Mortis to aid their attack on Hydra Cordatus?
A: You may indeed. Though is it a big mystery...? Drawing plans for my next HH book, which has a distinctly Irony flavour to parts of it. And a bit of a gooey, purpley texture too... I certainly think we'll see a good bit of Iron Warrior/Legio Mortis buddy comedy in my next HH offering...

Warsmith Honsou
и коммент от изобретателя сего вдохновителя девичьих мечт:
Excellent stuff. Keep us updated on his progress, as we haven't seen the last of that reprobate in print. Not by a long shot...

more rumours collected by careful perusal of Facebook comments:

There'll be some Ultramarine goodness soon in audio format (a companion piece to The Chapter's Due) then it might be a bit of a wait...though I've a great idea for a new Honsou story that might lead to bigger things.

It's (audio?) called Eye of Vengeance, and tells the adventures of another famous Ultramarines warrior...

Well, there's the omnibus, which may have some extra goodies inside it... Beyond that, no, we don't know

re: Storm of Iron:
I should go back and read it myself sometime. Everyone keeps telling me they like it... unsure.gif) Oh, and since one of the survivors crops up in a book I'm writing later this year...might be an idea to reacquaint myself with him...
I think that when next we see him, he might be a bit of a lone wolf, but he'll be back with the Warriors of Ironness soon...if he even survived Calth, that is...

Due to the narrative needs of the Heresy and the vagaries of schedules (mine and BL’s), I won’t be writing a book I long thought I’d write, but that’s okay, as I’ll likely be getting to write Bastards of Evil (not it’s real title…) as my next HH book, which – given some of the stuff we discussed in the morning – will be one I’m going to really enjoy writing. You’ll just have to wait and see what that is, but it’s juicy, and I’m talking medium-well Fillet Steak with pepper sauce juicy…

and who, pray tell, is habitually called 'Bastards of Evil', eh?

Mace: Will you be writing anything more of the Thousand Sons in the future?

"читать дальше"
GM: I think there’s certainly scope for another one, but it wouldn’t be for a while. When there’s so many new avenues to explore, it’s often counter-intuitive to go back to folk you’ve dealt with before. The main beats of their story has been told (as it’s known anyway…) and the main biggie of the Rubric doesn’t happen until after the Heresy. I became very attached to the Thousand Sons over the course of the book, so I’d be surprised if I don’t go back to them before it’s all over. I’d love to do a 40k story of Ahriman, where – in his mind – he’s still loyal, and is still fighting to prove that Chaos can be mastered and that the Emperor was wrong to chastise Magnus. Of course, he’s lost sight of the horrors he’s inflicting along the way, but that’s Chaos for you…

Mace: I would love to know if there will be another Iron Warriors book. Do you think the real Fulgrim is still around in the 40k universe, still trapped somewhere inside his painting?

GM: I suspect that Honsou is too bad to stay down for long, but how, where or if he’ll return with an Iron Warriors book is something I’ll need to think about. If there’s a story that he’d be perfect for, then I think he’ll come back. But I won’t bring him back just for the sake of it, only if there’s a good reason for him to be strutting around. As to Fulgrim, his presence in the portrait is something I quite fancy addressing in the Heresy series. Maybe some Emperor’s Children find out about it and, finding the idea repellent, try to do something about it. Not sure, but I think it’s a nice is he/isn’t he dangling hook.

Mace: Will we have more Ventris novels?

GM: You will indeed. The Chapter’s Due was NOT the last book, merely the end of an arc. I have the next three sketched out in my head already, and I can’t wait to get started on them, though it’s likely to be a little while as other projects elbow their way to the front of the schedule queue.
